Allergen Information

What is a food allergy?

Food allergies are not lekker and happen when your body reacts to food that is harmful to your immune system. The most common allergens for young kids are eggs and dairy, but most of them outgrow these allergies by the time they are 5 to 7 years of age. However, allergies such as seafood, peanuts, and tree nuts can develop later on in life and are lifelong conditions.

How do I know if I have a food allergy?

Allergic reactions might not be severe for some people, but for others they can be life-threatening. Signs of food allergies could start to show minutes after eating and should be treated immediately.

The most common food allergy signs and symptoms are:

  • Tingling or itching in the mouth
  • Itching skin, hives, or eczema
  • Swelling of lips, face, tongue, and throat, or other parts of the body
  • Wheezing, nasal congestion, or trouble breathing
  • Vomiting, abdominal pain, or diarrhoea
  • Fainting, dizziness, or light-headedness

What should I do if I think I have a food allergy?

See a doctor or allergist if you experience symptoms after eating. If possible, see your doctor while the food allergy is occurring as this will help them to make a diagnosis.

Seek emergency treatment if you develop any signs or symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as:

  • Constriction of airways that makes it difficult to breathe
  • Shock with a severe drop in blood pressure
  • Rapid pulse
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
